In the Sufi tradition, water is the symbol of transmission of knowledge. Every ritual place in Kazakhstan has a well or a source of fresh water, and these wells are regarded as the “eyes” of holy people who lie buried underneath. The purification ritual that Bifatima conducts using water signifies openness, preparedness for spiritual development, freedom from conventional stereotypes of thinking, and an understanding of the integrity of all being.
