Carpet-weaving has traditionally been used in the Sufi tradition as a device for the symbolic transmission of knowledge. Even a simple rug can play this role and also protect the house and its mistress. The ritual beating of the carpet signifies the purification of the house and the protection of the well-being of its inhabitants. In the words of Rumi, “when we beat a carpet, the beating is not directed at the carpet, but at the dust that sits on it”.
